1000 Words: Snapshots.

I haven’t felt very creative or inspired recently (Hence, a lack of meaningful posting, returning emails, or artistic endeavors, but as I flipped through my iPhoto log this evening, a few recent snapshots stood out at least a bit).  Enjoy:

1000 Words: President Normal?

I am aware of two things in posting these shots of Obama’s first 100 days in office.

  1. I am at risk of over-inundating this blog with photos recently.  Substantial posts coming folks!
  2. Some sort of political statement blah blah.

These shots by Callie Shell, a Time photographer, are stunning.  The full gallery can be viewed by clicking this link.  I unashamedly am intrigued by how normal Obama seems (His jump shot seems spot on!  He picked Carolina in the tourney!), and these photos prove it.  And I agree with DJ Holloway that The West Wing is the greatest written TV show EVER.  So, I love the behind the scenes stuff that makes me realize that the people governing our country (and influencing the world, for good or bad), are normal people like us.

1000 Words: Township Life (Submersion Experience).

I haven’t been able to find adequate words yet to describe my experience this past week in Soshanguve, and actually in fact have felt overwhelmed and drained with the implications that are building in my experiences so far through this apprenticeship.  More is coming, but here’s some of what I’ve been chewing on recently:

Do I have friends who are poor? (My friend and local pastor, Tom Smith)

I set out to see poverty in India and came face to face with poor people.  Despite my good intentions to personally observe and respond in India, I was at best a ministry tourist.  Equally important, I had not acquired this knowledge from the poor themselves.  I had not submerged myself as Jesus had submerged Himself in our world through His incarnation.  Good intentions, I have found, were not enough. (John Hayes, Submerge, p. 47).

There is hope for the rich, insofar as they act and serve in solidarity with the poor and oppressed.  In their being converted to God, rich and poor are converted toward each other.  Their main emphasis, ultimately, is on sharing, on community. (David Bosch, Transforming Mission, p. 104)

The concept of neighbor can no longer be solely geographical.

1000 Words: Innocent Beauty.

Afrikaans boy looking for the camera at Huis Judea, a ministry in Vollmer that reaches out to the impoverished Afrikaans community of Pretoria NorthAn Afrikaans boy looking for the camera at Huis Judea, a ministry in Vollmer that reaches out to the impoverished Afrikaans community of Pretoria North.

During our Orientation in mid-February, we traveled down the street to the southern part of Pretoria North (our local city) and visited Huis Judea, a (primarily) Afrikaans ministry that is located in Vollmer, an impoverished, largely marginalized and forgotten neighborhood in the city (especially since the fall of apartheid in 1994).  What is fascinating and equally heartbreaking about this neighborhood is that it is almost entirely composed of lower class Afrikaans citizens, a group that is rarely viewed as impoverished.  Huis Judea is attempting to stem the tide of poverty and create a welcoming home in this neighborhood that promotes holistic care for its citizens.

I stumbled across some of the most beautiful children I have ever seen.  In taking this second photo, a red ball came rolling into the picture at the exact right moment.  I was stunned at the beauty of these innocent faces!

The world is littered with beauty. Often, we must simply bend our gaze.

Don’t have too much to add in the way of brilliance, particularly at this late hour, nor do I wish to lessen these images with fluffy words.  But I have been truly enjoying photography ever since I left the United States, and feel like I am growing in my ability to ‘spot’ a picture each day!  I am employing simple rules from way back in High School when Mr. Ron Garcia taught us Black and White Photography with my mom’s old Nikon camera.  I remember he’d let me stay late in the Dark Room developing shots because I was always late to 7th period, as Thao La and I were editing the Yearbook, and essentially never finish quickly enough.  The freedom to experiment, stay late, and learn from a patient, warm Christian man was priceless.

A new ‘world’ to me in photography is learning to see things from new angles.  I am particularly interested in shots low to the ground right now, mainly because the ground is so textured, uneven, and full of color and contrast.  Low shots often seem to lend themselves to interesting contrasts, the ability to highlight a portion of the shot while allowing the rest of it to remain in soft-focus light, and providing for richly-colored images.  I hope you enjoy these…I sure am!

Bansky (Kids)

Walking along Portobello Road Farmer’s Market (London) in late January, I stumbled across a graffiti artist known as Bansky.  He stencils drawings into public places, using existing graffiti to enhance a picture’s beauty.

I think these photos are stunning.  And their creation makes an interesting point about our role within the Kingdom of God.

How are we called towards involvement in transforming something that once was broken, ugly, or dismissed into something beautifully complex and new again?
